Watercolourists do it on Yupo!

Instructor: Karen Bishop

We’ll discover how watercolour and Yupo work together to create loose and vibrant paintings.  We’ll explore reductive painting and see how pigments react to each other on this synthetic paper.  We’ll let the paint do the work and drop colour into wet washes, tipping our paper to create wonderful effects that will be the basis for landscape painting.

The morning will be spent getting used to the paper and its unique qualities - we’ll do a series a small paintings (6 x 6”) exploring drawing techniques, washes, layering and how to create an exciting painting from a wet in wet background.  We’ll also practice lifting paint to create wonderful lights and textures.

In the afternoon I invite participants to bring 1 or 2 photographs or sketches with them to work from on a large (1 x 14”) painting.  I will advise, one on one, on composition and how to tackle the subject matter in a different, fun and exciting way where the paint and the paper are the stars of the show!

Participants should bring the following supplies:

  • at least one transparent yellow, red and blue watercolour
  • one opaque yellow, red and blue and Indigo or other really dark pigment (not black)
  • Karen will have a tube of each of her colours available if people would like to try them for a charge of 50c per squeeze.
  • A selection of brushes,
  • 1 or 2 painting boards (2 small and 1 larger for their final piece)
  • a permanent fine tip artist pen, a pencil (no eraser)
  • water container, rags or paper towel, tape (to tape the paper to the board)
  • a sketch book
  • Yupo paper will be supplied
