Artist Statement
Artist’s Statement – William Carstairs

I am interested in the growth and development of the human condition; fascinated by the signs and traces of their social activities and cultures. Themes of my work include people and places, political satire, war and its effects, developments and settlements, and ancient civilizations.

I gather inspirations for my art through travel, history, reading and material explorations. I use juxtaposition of subjective colours and contrasting themes or ideas to draw attention to a theme or to identify the propaganda we have been given through media information. I also like to work with historic art pieces and manipulate the images to create a current context. I enjoy it if my art means something or cause the viewer to feel something when they are looking at it or thinking about it. The development of my sense of style, subject matter and mediums has been through exploration. Even the times where the result has not been what I had hoped for, it often got me closer to where I needed to be.

I work with a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, conte and pencil. I attempt to find a unique and unusual perspective for each subject in my choice of colours, techniques and painting traditions. My influences come from a variety of genres and time periods including works from Monet, Da Vinci, Dali, De Chirico, Kitaj, Raphael, Jackson, Goya and Renoir and more recently Kuczynski. I look at my art as a search for my identity as an artist. The path I have chosen has many changes in direction, but every step taken has had its’ purpose in my quest to improve the art I create.
