Artist Biography
I was born in southern Saskatchewan in 1952 and have resided in Morinville, Alberta since 1981. My introduction to the Muse began at age seven, “learning to draw with Jon Gnagy.” My formal instruction began in public school and community programming, and has continued in workshops and course work, including the Red Deer College Summer-Scape series, the Visual Arts certificate program at the U of A (Extension), International Baccalaureate teacher certification. I am grateful for the mentorship of distinguished Alberta artists James Davies and Jerry Heine, and appreciative of the influence of John Singer Sargent, Dorothy Knowles, and Richard Schmid. I have taught art in public schools from grades six to twelve and worked with beginning art teachers.

I am a member of the St. Albert Painters Guild, the Visual Arts Studio Association (of St. Albert) – VASA, Visual Arts Alberta (CARFAC), and Centre des Arts Visuels de l’Alberta (CAVA). I have exhibited my paintings at St. Albert Place, the Hemingway Centre, Gallery 7 (Bookstore on Perron), the Morinville Community Cultural Centre, the Art Gallery of St. Albert (AGSA), the St. Albert Outdoor Market, and Centre des Arts Visuels de l’Alberta (CAVA). Some personal highlights include being nominated for the St. Albert Cultivates the Arts award for Excellence in Arts Teaching in 2010, awarded a People’s Choice Award at the St. Albert Painters Guild Spring Show in 2013, and participation in the Cultivate Life Mural Mosaic project in 2012, the Canada 150 Mural Mosaic in 2017 and the Sturgeon County Centennial Mural Mosaic project in 2018. My paintings are represented in private collections in Canada, Japan and Switzerland.
Artist Statement
I work in a variety of media, primarily in a representational style that reflects my diverse interests in landscape, portraiture and still life. My current focus on watercolour media exemplifies my interests in gardening, my love of the land and the cultural diversity of its inhabitants engaged in ordinary, everyday pursuits. My ‘genre painting’ themes are illustrated in my use of pen and ink, graphite and charcoal marks, varying applications of paint with a variety of brushes and tools, and reductive techniques.
Art Instruction Experience
I have taught art from grades six to twelve with the St. Albert Catholic School District, the last five years (2006-2011) at St. Albert Catholic High School. A number of my award-winning students advanced to study in post-secondary institutions in Canada and abroad, and currently engaged in meaningful, successful careers in the fine arts, fashion, photography and design. I have also developed monographs for use in guided workshops to beginning teachers and International Baccalaureate art seminars.
Adjudication Experience
I have adjudicated the art works of senior high school International Baccalaureate art students at St. Albert Catholic High School and both junior and senior high works of art at Morinville schools. I continue to adjudicate the Annual Remembrance Day Poster Contest entries on behalf of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #271, St. Albert (since 2011).
