Eagle Owl in Coloured Pencil – Workshop with Susan Casault

Saturday, April 6, 2024

St. Albert Painters Guild Studio

10 am – 4 pm

Limit: 12 participants

Whether you are new to coloured pencil or have already fallen in love with it, join us for the day to draw a Eurasian eagle owl on black paper. You will layer colours, work with values, and learn how to create the texture of feathers to bring out the character of this charming bird. Learn by demonstrations as well as individual guidance. Photo reference will be provided by the instructor. Students are welcome to bring their own photos if they prefer.

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

One 10" x 11" piece of Stonehenge Paper – Black
(a 22” x 30” sheet will cut into sixths)
Precut paper will also be available for purchase from the instructor

Coloured Pencils - must be artist's quality (for example: Prismacolor Premier, Derwent Coloursoft, Faber Castell Polychromos, Lyra Rembrandt, Caran D’Ache Luminence, Holbien)

The following list are Prismacolor Premier colours, however, they are phasing out the sale of individual colours so other brands may be substituted. If you have other pencils please bring them to class. This owl can be drawn in just white, orange and brown but if you want more of a variety of colours, here is what I would suggest:

                                    White 938

Poppy Red 922 (medium orangey red)

                                    Orange 918

                                    Light Umber 941 (medium brown)

Mineral Orange 1033 (or a burnt ochre, reddish brown)

                                    50% Cool Grey 1063

Perwinkle 1025 (any medium blue) - optional

Sand 940 (light yellow ochre) - optional

A pencil sharpener that works with your coloured pencils (recommendation: I prefer an electric sharpener but Prismacolor manual sharpener with vestibule, Koh-i-noor 3-hole manual sharpener, or Exacto battery operated sharpener all work well)

1 kneaded eraser

1 graphite HB pencil

Eraser (drafting) brush – optional

Masking tape (green painters tape works best) - optional

Bring an inexpensive piece of drawing paper for your initial drawing or you can trace the initial image from the photocopy. White or coloured transfer paper to transfer the image onto the black paper (transfer paper can be purchased from the instructor for $2)

We will be drawing on tables, if you prefer a more upright surface, please bring a drawing board.

Most art stores will give a discount on supplies for an art class, so make sure you take your class receipt with you when shopping.  Some art stores in Edmonton include Delta Art and Drafting, The Gilded Rabbit, Colours Art and Framing, and The Paint Spot.
